News from Vicki

29 May 2013

Have been unbelievably slack in doing updates of late.. and so much has been happening!!  Have sold a couple of horses to Queensland.  My lovely Kenny has gone to the super home of Clem and Sharlene Smith.  He is a super talent, but always tricky enough.  I bought him as a repair job, like most of my European purchases, as they are within my very limited budget range!  He had competed at the highest level with my good friend Edouard Couperie, but had been sold to a rider in Spain, who did not get on with him, and was returned a bit of a nervous wreck.  So there was a bit of work to be done, but once confident again, he was super fun for me, being Leading Part 1 Horse at his first Sydney Royal, and at the last show I did on him, the Summer Classic at SIEC, won the 1.40 class on the first day over a Leopoldo Palacious track.  However, over 1.50 he was always a little worried, and at my age and stage (I had a bit of a milestone birthday not so long ago, but we won’t discuss that!) I didn’t feel I needed the stress of his stress!  Benny had a great time on him in the big group at the George Morris Clinic, and that was developing when Clem and Sharlene rang me about him.  My feeling was that Clem would be one of the few riders in Oz who could still get the best out of Kenny, so agreed to let them trial him and subsequently buy him.  Am now delighted to hear that the new partnership is working out so well, with many Grand Prix placings and clear rounds.

Also Noblewood Park Cassini’s Girl came back to us to be sold, as her previous rider, Sarah Meale, has pretty much taken up residence in Canada now.  So I had a great time with Cassie, and she has now also headed north to Kelly King, who I’m sure will have a lot of fun with her.  Looking forward to seeing Kenny and Cassie when we head north in July.  Also got Sarah’s other horse, Rivoli Panther, reunited with his original rider and producer, Jenelle Waters, so great for Jenelle to have her old mate back.

Sydney Royal was great for my little team with Casino winning and placing in nearly all the Part 3’s, and just missing out on Leading Part 3 horse to Tom McD and Laguna Beach.  Kurt was super in Part 2, also placing in most, and then doing a lovely round in his first World Cup for 2 green fences down, this class being won by Sharon Slater and Ulixes.  Many thanks to the RAS for once again bringing Werner Deeg out to design wonderful tracks for us all show.

2 weeks later, and our first ever 3* show was held at Sydney Polo Club.  Many, many thanks to John and Kerry Winning and their team for finally making this fantastic initiative happen.  Conditions were perfect, and Kevin Hansen, the Horse of the Year supremo from NZ designed very testing tracks for us all weekend.  Kurt showed the benefit of his Sydney Royal experience and stepped up to the mark and jumped his socks off to win the Gold Series Grand Prix, from Paul Athanasoff and Wirragulla Nicklaus, the only other double clear round.  I was a very happy little old lady that day!!

Kurt at the Showcase of Showjumping

My superstar Kurt jumping his socks off to won the 3* Gold Grand Prix at the Showcase of Showjumping.  Thanks Jenny Sheppard for the pic.

Then we headed west to Dubbo, which is a show I love.  Great jumping surface, plenty of room in the warm up, excellent stables, great tracks this year designed by Warren Priestley.  Had a super show this year, ending up Leading Rider, and Casino was Leading Jumping Horse, so lots of nice rugs..

In OS news it is great to hear that Alison Rowland and Rory Hovell going so well so quickly.  Normally it takes a little while to adjust to Europe, but these guys have hit the ground running with a great 2nd in their first Nations Cup at Linz, with Phil Lever on Cathy Graham’s DaVinci’s Pride, and James Passey on Sue Knox’ Cortina.  Then Doog (Alison) and Bickley Brook Bella, owned and bred by her and Peter Cooke, won a 3* Grand Prix at La Boissiere in France.  Great work guys!!  And am so proud that Bella is sired by my superstar Premier des Hayettes.  Was written by the Horse Magazine that she is possibly the first purpose bred Australian horse to win a major European Grand Prix?  That is so cool!

Hopefully not too long til the next update...
