News from Vicki

17 March 2010

Castle Hill a wonderful show for Team Roycroft, to which I am forever grateful, as it had excellent footing, very careful gear and great courses designed by Mark Atkins (I guess he knew I was going to say that....).  Also the NSW Jumping Council gear had been freshly painted under the supervision of Andrew Inglis and Jenny Sheppard, and was positively gleaming.

First day had height classes with good prizemoney, and while the aforementioned Jenny and Andrew received some reward for all their hard work painting the gear by running 1st and 2nd, most of the money went towards Mount White after that.  Ash jumped like a hero to win the 1.15 class by a couple of seconds, then Ben, a little dark because he'd had a rail down in the 1.15, rode a foot perfect round on his giant chestnut Ryles to win the 1.25 A2 from 50 in the field, including some of the best 1.20 horses in the country!  Eliza Jane and I were 2nd, and Levi and I were 4th.  Eliza Jane then rounded out our good day by winning 1.35 A2 from first draw, with Cougar being 3rd.

Saturday had graded classes, and Ben continued his good form by jumping a super clear round, one of only 6, in the quite tough D Grade Ch'ship on Errol's green 5 year old daughter Nikki des Hayettes, who is looking classier and classier.  C Grade Ch'ship saw Willy just pipped by Amanda Madigan on the good Darco mare, Oaks Aaltes.  The Mini Prix saw the second of a treble for imports with Julia Hargreaves winning on her Jan Tops purchase, Vedor. Andrew Inglis then won the Grand Prix on his and Jenny's Darco mare Amira.  Cougar jumped super, one cheap rail giving him 4th place.  Sophie had her only outing prior to Sydney Royal when she jumped 4 lovely rounds HC on both Levi and Jane in the D and the C Grade classes.

Sunday is more of a low key day with mainly Junior, Young Rider and C and D classes.  Ben and Ryles went well for a couple of 5th placings, and clear rounds on Nikki, Lee and Puzzle shook out the cobwebs, Lee having been away for a while, to place in both their classes, as did Cassie and JFK, and Stef on Cynan the Wonderpony.  Sara had been ill with a stomach bug, so I rode Shrek and Chucky (aka Pacific Wave), and Chucky won the 1.15 class.  Willy had been a bit spooky in the Mini Prix on Saturday, so I popped him around the 1.25, and he won that in good style.

Meanwhile at Northside Riding Club Nicky and Monty kept the Team Roycroft flag flying with a win and a second in the 1.05 and 90 cm classes, so it was good to hear that Nicky's patience is being rewarded, as Monty is still very green, and both are learning very fast!

I am now in the Philippines, catching up and teaching all my great students here, who are spoiling me rotten, when I am not slavedriving them on their horses!  Then back next Monday to get set to take Cougar, Willy, Ryles and Jane down to the Royal later this month.
